Summary: Amusing child's fantasy
The movie doesn't have a lot to appeal to adults, and tells a fairly simplistic and childish fantasy tale about a boy who discovers he's a magician and goes to attend school for same. He has several small adventures, and is backed up by decent special effects and a large production, but the end result is merely very good, not quite excellent.

I would say the movie would appeal more to children and Harry Potter fans than to adults.

Viewing Location: satellite, again and again and again Grade: B+
Summary: Adequate movie translation of a popular book
This movie seems to be being played several times a week on cable, so if you haven't seen it, you must be living under a rock or something. I saw it before reading the book, and I could tell that they had to skip over a lot of stuff to get the main story thread all in. Still, it tells a good story, and it's good enough at it that I've ended up catching it or parts of it on TV more times than I can count. There's enough to it that you end up picking up on certain things on repeated watchings that you probably missed the first time around.
