Like a lot of movies made about TV, this movie can get away with mediocre production values and knock-off ideas (Dwayne's Underworld, e.g.) for humor's sake. It ends up turning into a "I learned something and made something of my life" story almost accidentally at the end, but it works overall. Unfortunately, a lot of the TV references would now be lost on the younger generation that never saw a lot of the shows that it riffs on (like Three's Company), so this movie is destined to not age well. But it doesn't take itself seriously, which helps.
