Summary: The technological feat that wasn't quite pulled off
This was a pure CGI movie that was made by putting dots on real actors faces and mapping them to CGI. But the problem with this is that facial expressions are very subtle and relying on dots turns out to be not accurate enough. The results are flat expressions with wooden characters. This made it hard to believe the characters, although the CGI sets and surroundings and monsters were all perfectly fine. So the whole dot-mapping bit needs to be enhanced to use completely generated expressions like Pixar does.
