Summary: Silly entertaining movie whose pseudo-science doesn't totally suck
Ivan Reitman has been directing comedies since Stripes and Ghostbusters, so if you're expecting a wacked comedy, you'd be right on. David Duchovny plays a disgraced scientist turned community college teacher who has the biggest scientific discovery of all-time land right in his neighborhood. Of course the military gets involved, and the set-up allows for all kinds of weird alien creatures to show up and cause various kinds of havoc and mayhem. Like many of these kinds of movies, it takes a little while for the action to get going, but once it does it lurches from one situation to another the rest of the way. The aliens are a good mix of funny/silly and threatening, and generally the movie ends up greater than the sum of its modest parts.
