Cat of the Day

October 15, 1999

This is my cat, Pixel. My ex's cat is named Raster, but I'll let her talk about him in her web page. When we had Raster for a few days, we felt that he would be a lonely kitten all by himself, and hence set about finding him a brother. Luckily for us, someone else at the office happened to be giving away kittens, and we drove out to Long Island to take a look.

Pixel turned out to be this extremely wild kitten that had never been touched by human hands. He had been caught in a cage used to trap raccoons and other animals. We took him home, a little afraid that he would never be a completely domestic cat.

Fortunately, Pixel calmed down after a few weeks and quickly turned into a cute, cuddly fuzzball. He and Raster played and played and kept each other amused while my wife and I slaved away at the office all day.

Pixel is not a very bright cat. He is now four years old, and is much better than he used to be, but growing up he used to have major problems with jumping. He would get set to leap on Raster and end up jumping straight up instead. Nowadays though, he can leap from the floor to a box [sylvest.gif] to the top of an open door, where he balances himself precariously before leaping to even higher places.

After hearing about my cats, my mother got two cats, Susie and Robbie. Unfortunately Robbie fell ill and didn't live very long. Happily though, they adopted another cat, Billie, who's really big and lovable.

When my ex moved out in 1998, she took Raster with her. So for a year Pixel had the whole place to himself. He really enjoyed being the king of the house and the master of his domain. In 1999, Pixel & I adopted a new kitten, Koshka. Koshka's a russian blue, a little girl kitten, and is completely adorable. You should hear her little motor purr!

Koshka had to leave us in 2001 after I met my wife and moved in with her and her cat. He then had many more adventures which are chronicled elsewhere.

Lately, Pixel has taken to programming in C. Here is an example of one of his earliest programs:

/* An attention getting program */
/* By Pixel */

#include <stdio.h>

main()
{
     printf("mee-yow!  mee-yow!  mee-yow!\n");

} /* The end. I want cat treats now. */

He usually doesn't write very long programs, due to a problem with attention span. He can however, watch birds and garden activity for hours with little difficulty.

Pixel's favorite hobbies:

Pixel's cousins live in Texas.
  1. playing on the computer
  2. watching the garden
  3. clicking while watching birds in the window
  4. chasing his brother
  5. being brushed
    1. on his back
    2. on his face
    3. on his tail
  6. leaping to the top of the door
