The Siege C+ 11/7/1998 8:30pm Secaucus Surprisingly, this movie is a futile attempt by Hollywood to pander to the minorities. The white people are the evil ones, guilty and at fault for everything; the minorities save the day. And the towel-heads are once again shown as men of peace who would never do anything warlike unless you actually fall for that line of bull and then they become terrorists. Sad, really. Otherwise, this could have been a decent film. The action and pacing was done right, but the storyline was stupid. As for the US Army invading Brooklyn... give me a fucking break. No army in the world could do that. And everyone would just flee in ten thousand directions anyway. Over two million people live in Brooklyn, how's a few thousand troops gonna do jack with that? Lolita B- 11/14/1998 3:30pm Union Square Lolita's been out for quite a while but I just wanted to try out the new Union Square 14-screen multiplex with stadium seats. It was nice! Anyway in the film Jeremy Irons does a splendid job (as usual) as the old lech of a man who falls for the young Lolita. Melanie Griffith plays the mother. The story is pretty well-told, although the mystery and drama all falls out as the motives are revealed and we are left with a sad old man with a problem. Which, I guess, was the point. If you're looking for nudity, forget it, there's just one scene, and it's dark, and it's a stunt cunt. Enemy of the State B- 11/25/1998 8:15pm Secaucus Will Smith stars as a lawyer that gets caught up in an NSA cover-up that results in the spooks screwing up his life and coming after him with a mountain of new technology (except for 80's-era infrared cameras). This has him running like mad until he hooks up with a retired spook who's now an anti-spook, played by Gene Hackman, who does a good job of it. The NSA hackers are overly stereotypical and the storyline is almost a carbon copy of the "The Net", so they certainly didn't score points for originality. Very Bad Things C+ 11/26/1998 3:30pm Secaucus Christian Slater puts on his psycho hat as the leader of a group of friends who screw up during a bachelor party and try to cover up the accidental murder of the dancer/escort. One thing leads to another and soon more people are getting hurt. There are some sporadic funny moments in the movie, much like the gross-out flick "There's Something About Mary". Maybe there's something about Cameron Diaz, she plays a spazz in this film too. The scenes with her becoming completely psychotic about the wedding details were more than a bit uncomfortably familiar. In the end there's nothing to cheer about, and I think I could have spent the time in a better fashion... but at least Slater does a great performance, as he usually does.
