The Thomas Crown Affair 9/4/1999 7:10pm Gutenberg C- Pierce Brosnan plays a very rich executive in New York City that pulls off an amazing crime at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The insurance company that covers the painting stolen sends their investigator, played by Rene Russo, to help the police find the thief. Ms. Russo's character then woos Thomas Crown, who is smitten by her good looks and great intelligence. The only problem with this is that Rene Russo appears to be 45-50 years old in the film, older than Pierce Brosnan, and while the director did dress her up in revealing outfits, I found the whole thing very disturbing. I never did understand why he found her so fascinating. So the film fails to be believable. The rest of the film was a bit of a "warmup" for his next James Bond film, which I am eagerly awaiting. In Too Deep 9/6/99 2pm Secaucus C+ This is a very stereotypical movie about a cop who goes undercover and is undercover so long that he forgets who he is. Unfortunately the script is written so poorly that it's hard very hard to believe. There's just no sense that the character is ever losing his identity, or losing his mind. One scene he's undercover, next he's talking to his captain, now he's undercover, now he's taking a college class. And he develops, if develop qualifies here, a relationship with a nude model in one of his classes, because after she says she never dates students, she immediately then dates him. It's all bullshit, really. The only bright side is that LL Cool J plays the bad guy, and does a damn fine job of it. He's 2 for 2 this Summer, and I expect him to have a ' good future. Stigmata 9/10/1999 6pm Greenwich Village A- At first, this appears to be a typical demonic possession film. But as the plot (yes there is a plot) unfolds, it turns out to be a mystery, with political intrigue in the Vatican. It's very mysterious and interesting, with decent special effects. What I really liked was that there weren't any loose ends, everything made some sort of sense. If you can stand the sight of blood, I strongly recommend you check out this film.
