Son of the Pink Panther C+ MGM/UA 9/1 9:55pm $6 Delray 10 Mildly amusing, and funny in places, this is the story of the son of Inspector Clouseau, who falls in love with the half-blind princess with a real hot body, chases her kidnappers and rescues her. Along with, of course, several blunders and errors and mistakes and goofups that are the trademark symbol of the Pink Panther. The Wall (R) A+ MGM/UA 9/3 Midnight $6.50 Mizner Park Okay, so this isn't a new movie. Actually, it came out in 1982. Still, it is better than anything else I've seen this year, the only thing that comes close would be "Falling Down". This is the Pink Floyd classic, with far, far more symbolism and imagery than the album. This is a must-see movie, either stoned, drunk, or cold sober. This is the first time I've actually gotten to experience it on the big screen. The Man Without a Face (PG13) B- Icon/Warner Brothers 2:30pm 9/4 $4 Delray 10 Mel Gibson's disappointed effort at directing, and a slow, dull script, make for a movie that doesn't live up to the hype. Still a good film with good actors, this feel-good movie could have been better with a little more excitement, plot development, and character development. Maybe Mel should stick to action films! Fortress (R) B- Dimension/Miramax 1:30pm 9/5 $4 Delray 10 Lambert plays a convict in a prison set in the future, where all is high-tech and enforced with lasers and exploding intestinal pods. The sets were cute, all four of them, but the acting was a bit lame. The action had good pacing to it, but there was more stress on gore, really. One really cute part was where a guy gets his abdomen blown away, and he puts his hand into the gaping cavity to find nothing there, as he dies... Needful Things (R) A Castle Rock/Columbia 10:05pm 9/6 $6 Delray 10 Much better than most Stephen King movies, this one really satisifies. A devil of a man comes to a peaceful small town, opens a shop selling wonderful things... but for an evil price. One thing leads to another and soon his evilness has infected the whole town... dare I say psychodrama? Plus, the orchestral soundtrack contributes greatly to the mood. True Romance (R) B Morgan Creek (R) 10:15pm 9/10 $6 Delray 10 Christian Slater is a lucky guy who dances through an opera of guns and violence. There are some great performances in this film, but the plot is lame, and the motivations of the characters is completely out to lunch at times. I guess we're to understand that they're all crazy. An exciting film, just not very memorable. Undercover Blues (PG13) B+ MGM/UA 9/11 7:50pm $6 Delray 10 Kathleen Turner and Dennis Quaid play a lovable couple who are on maternity leave from their job as gov't spies. Of course, the government has a job they just HAVE to do, which leads them to whine and bitch about it. But they do it anyway, and never even break into a sweat. It's very exciting, but has cutesy baby scenes all over it, which really spoil it for me. Is it a warm-your-heart film or an action film? In trying to do both, the characters lose depth, the plot is thin, and the details are glossed over while the same jokes are played again and again. You've seen the previews; that's what the whole movie is like. The Real McCoy (PG13) C Universal 9/14 7:30pm $6 Delray 10 Kim Bassinger stars as a good looking bank robber. But it's not a skin flick, you don't see any hot sex. It's not exactly an action flick... McCoy's fighting skills are pathetic. It's not exactly a mystery, or a sci-fi, or a high-tech adventure... most of the film just kind of wanders around. Actually it's rather boring in places. I don't know why it's called The Real McCoy... is there a fake McCoy? Does she have a personality problem? No, nothing like that. Just a woman who's supposedly an expert bank robber who is forced to commit another bank robbery because her son's held hostage. Ho hum. Boxing Helena (R) B 9/16 8:05pm $6.50 Mizner Park The daughter of David Lynch tries her own shot at being weird. Well, it's a very weird film, alright. Actually uncomfortable in places. But it makes you think, even days after you see the movie. Basically the story is about a brilliant surgeon who is socially inept, and he is lusting maniacally after this one babe, but she disses him, and he tries various insane and weird things to force her to love him. Note, this is not an overly enjoyable film, so don't go if you're in the mood for light comedy or stress relief. Striking Distance (R) B 9/17 10:10pm $6 Delray 10 Bruce Willis in an okay action film. He plays a cop patrolling the rivers of Pittsburgh who's on the tail of a serial killer. Not an overly original plot by any means, but the characters are slightly interesting, particularly the casting. Somehow, all the other cops are played by actors who are famous for playing italian/mafia bad guys. Personally, I think Hudson Hawk was more entertaining; it had better gimmicks. Into The West (PG) C 9/20 5:15pm $4 Delray 10 A feel-good story with a plot that's a realistic as glow-in-the-dark beans that sing, about a couple boys who have an adventure with a white horse that comes from basically nowhere. Throughout the film the boys and their father face the facts and cope with their mother's death, a whole seven years before. Not very exciting. The Good Son (R) A- 20th Century Fox 9/24 7:30pm $6 Delray 10 This is the story about a boy whose mother dies, and so his father, who has to go on a business trip, leaves him with the relatives for a couple weeks. Amongst the relatives are the boy's cousins, one of which is a pretty demented boy. As the story progresses, we find out just how evil the cousin is, and our young hero tries to stop him from hurting anyone else. One thing leads to another, and before long you have a surprisingly interesting thriller with some character development. This one's definitely worth seeing-- it's better than you might think. The Program (R) B- Touchstone 9/26 7:50pm $6 Delray 10 If you've seen the previews, you've pretty much seen the film. Oh, there's some scenes that deal with a couple relationships, and a few scenes where they actually play football, but this movie is flooded with subplots that just kind of wander around. James Caan plays an unconvincing coach who just doesn't seem to be in the spirit of things. Basically, he'll do anything to keep his job, it looks like. Anyhow, the movie has its cute moments, and exciting scenes, but it ain't great. Warlock II (R) B+ Trimark 9/29 9:50pm $6 Cobb Boynton 8 This sequel has little to do with the original, other than the warlock is played by the same actor. This plot has to do with druids saving the world from Armageddon by preventing Satan's arrival. It all revolves around some gemstones of magical power... okay, it all sounds silly, but it's a very exciting film with lots of blood and gore! I just wish there could have been more nudity. Movies are getting too prudish about that.
