Clear and Present Danger B+ 8/5 7:15pm Secaucus This is another of Clancy's novels turned into film, starring Harrison Ford. And it's pretty exciting, with lots of stunts and explosions, Overall, it's a pretty satisfying movie about a government operation against a drug lord in South America. The problem with the movie is that there is no mystery, not much suspense, no outstanding character acting... just kind of a generic action/adventure flick. The Mask A- 8/6 7:30pm Secaucus Jim Carrey returns as a depressed bank employee who does the lonely loser bachelor thing until one day he discovers a mask which gives him the power to do all sorts of things, be indestructible, and cause a lot of havoc. The powers turn him into a cartoonish character and mold his features in a cartoon fashion, which makes the film extremely comical. This makes it both funny and exciting. And for those of you who like cute dogs, Carrey's character has a cute dog, too. In The Army Now B+ 8/12 10:45pm Secaucus Pauly Shore does a respectable job as a goofball who joins the army reserves to get some extra cash. Thinking water purification would be the easiest job, he signs up for that. Of course then a war breaks out in Chad and the reserves are called and he gets messed up in a war. It's pretty funny in many places, and Shore isn't near as bad as you'd expect him to be. Color of Night B+ 8/19 9:40pm Times Square Bruce Willis plays a disturbed psychiatrist who goes to see his friend in LA for a vacation, but the friend is killed and one of the crazies in the "Monday group" is probably the killer, the police think. So he tries to find out who. Meanwhile he develops a love interest in this slinky hispanic girl who just happens to bump into him. It's a fairly clever whodunnit, but a few hours after the movie you'll be saying "now wait a minute..." as it doesn't really make a lot of sense after all. It is exciting, though, in places, and the sex scenes provide a nice view.
