The Firm 7/1 6:30pm $6 Delray 10 B+ Tom Cruise does a fine acting job, as usual. The pacing is done really well, and the plot does make you think about the moral issues involved. I personally would rather have had sexier scenes in the film. The movie is exciting to watch, well worth the time. The story is about a young lawyer fresh out of Harvard who gets hired by a firm that turns out to be controlled by the mafia, and how he tries to get out of it without getting killed in the process. In the Line of Fire A- 7/12 10:20pm $6 Delray 10 This movie is very entertaining in that it gives, for the first time in movies, a good treatment of what life in the Secret Service is like. Eastwood has moved into playing "older men" roles now, and it is a good transition. Here he plays a veteran agent (stress on veteran-- he's been an agent for at least 30 years) who has to hunt down a wacko who's out to kill the president. Hocus Pocus D- 7/18 4:45pm $4 Delray 10 Now this wasn't any fun at all. A dumb movie about some retarded witches. I totally fail to see how anyone over the age of ten, or with an IQ over 80, could really enjoy this film. Maybe if you are a little sister who enjoys tormenting your older brother, then maybe you could relate to this. But gaaah, what a waste of time. Don't rent this. If people start this up on the VCR, walk out of the room. Poetic Justice B 7/24 8:15pm $6.50 Ventura 16 I saw this in a black neighborhood in the biggest movieplex I've ever seen. Sixteen fuckin' screens! Anyhow, this is a Singleton flick. The acting was great with 3 of the 4 stars; they should have used a real actress instead of Janet Jackson. And the poetry Jackson reads? Blech! Inane, dull shit. I tell ya, if they had skipped the poetry part, and used a real actress, this would have been an excellent movie. As it is, it's still good. A feel-good happy romance, with the black "shut your fucking hole, bitch!" culture. Another Stakeout B- 7/27 10:00pm $6 Delray 10 Emelio Estevez and Richard Dreyfus give humorous, charming performances as buddy-buddy cops on a stakeout, but the movie is spoiled by the fat lady assistant DA who insists on going on the stakeout with them. She basically fucks everything up and it's amazing they get out alive; fortunately she gets shot in the end. And she has a damn dog, too, which is another annoyance. Just another movie that could have been excellent but is handicapped down to merely good. Robin Hood: Men in Tights A 7/29 9:45pm $5.50 Movies 5 of Delray This is an excellent Mel Brooks film. If you don't like his style, you won't like this film. But if you do, then this is up there amongst his better movies (like Blazing Saddles). Here, he royally rips up Costner's Robin Hood, basically mocking it left and right, and making fun of Robin Hood movie cliches in general. And then there's the surprise guest appearance at the end, starring as King Richard... ah, that would be telling.
