Desert Blue C+ 6/5/1999 9:35pm Angelika Christina Ricci, one of the all-time great goth chicks, stars in this arthouse flick about life in a small desert town where all the kids happen to be the same age (young adult). This is a very slow-moving movie with just a little character development; it's almost like Breakfast Club in the Desert but Breakfast Club was much more interesting. These guys just hang out stupidly and don't really think at all. It was a little disappointing, but at least Ricci gave a fine performance and I'm looking forward to seeing her in more films. She's grown up to be one HOT babe. Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me B+ 6/12/1999 7:40pm West New York Mike Myers returns as Dr. Evil, and is actually quite funny the second time around, even though most of the material is recycled from the first film. Oh yeah, he also plays Austin Powers, but all good lines belong to Dr. Evil. The co-star, Miss Shagwell, is quite a hot babe, and there's lots of cute jokes and gags throughout the film. I just wish it hadn't been such a copy of the first film. The General's Daughter B 6/26/1999 7:15pm Guttenberg John Travolta plays a military investigative officer who is looking to find an explanation for a mysterious rape/murder of the local general's daughter. He quickly discovers more and more clues leading to a big conspiracy. Meanwhile he has to work an ex-girlfriend that he dated back when she was engaged to her husband that she's now divorcing; basically, the movie strives to drive home the point that there are no values in the Army. There's even the obligatory gay relationship and "don't ask, don't tell" scene. Go figure. Anyway Travolta is a fine actor and delivers a good performance, but aside from that it's really hard to be shocked or surprised by the conspiracy. South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut A 6/30/1999 7:20pm Guttenberg I just couldn't stop screaming! The audience was howling and cheering as well. This is one of the funniest movies ever made. The extremely offensive humor in South Park is so over-the-edge that it just blows you away. And since it's rated R, they hold *nothing* back... the kids are cussing and violent and there's nonstop sexual "adult theme matter". If you've seen the TV show, then you're almost ready for the movie. The main differences are the movie is more extreme, and it's a musical. Yes, sadly, they decided to fill the film with sappy songs. Some of these numbers are very funny and humorous, but others are just filler. If it wasn't for that, this could have been the best movie of the year.
