June '93 Lost in Yonkers C 6/10 2:40 $4 Town Center I think this was a Neil Simon thing. Anyhow it's a character study and not very interesting at that. Dreyfuss plays an exciting character but he's not the star; the story revolves around two children who are forced to stay with their evil grandma for a year while Dad works as a traveling salesman. (The mother's dead.) It's set in 1942, all the young men are off to war or are criminals or are too handicapped to serve. Actually the women in the film are all pretty much handicapped, too. It's rather slow and boring in places, but it seems to capture life in 1942 pretty well. I found myself asking, "Why didn't I go see Jurassic Park instead?" Guilty As Sin B+ 6/11 4:55 $4 Delray 10 This is your typical Don Johnson flick-- his great acting, stuck in a B-movie. Frankly, I miss Miami Vice; that was more exciting. The plot here is Johnson plays a womanizer who allegedly killed his rich wife, and he schmoozes this female lawyer to defend him in court. His real game is romancing the chick, tho', and his character is a lot more complex and intelligent than originally appeared. Sadly, there wasn't much nudity in it. The lawyer does bear a striking resemblence to Hillary Clinton, tho', so if you wanna drop acid and view the film as an "evil man bashes Hillary" movie, it's quite a trip. Jurassic Park B 6/12 7:30 $6 Delray 10 No Barney and Baby Bop here-- that is made apparent right from the start, as the main character describes in gory detail how ancient dinosaurs would tear up a boy's belly and spill his intestines. This is a very exciting movie, and is strikingly a lot like the movie "Jaws". There's a lot of critics saying "you might want to leave the kids home..." but that's a load of bullshit. Kids are used to such violence and excitement these days. You might want to leave grandma home tho', she'll wet her Depends Undergarments. Plot? Doesn't matter. Dinosaurs running around chasing and eating people, nifty special effects. Last Action Hero A- 6/18 7:45 $6 Delray 10 This was a great flick. Exciting, colorful, and packed with violence. It ran for 2h 15m, which may have been a bit long. The premise here is that this young kid gets magically thrown into the movie "Jack Slater IV" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The movie "Jack Slater IV" is excellent, and the real film "Last Action Hero" would have been better if there was no kid, just the "Jack Slater" movie. But since there's the kid, we get to see what the movie universe is like, and it's full overdramatic scenes, overfictionalized characters, and (the best part) filled with allusions to other movies. For example, the kid is riding a bicycle and an explosion sends him flying through the night sky, where we get to see his silhouette against the moon, like in "E.T.". Near the end of the movie though, the last 45m or so, things take place in the "real world", and the pacing is broken. Lots of funny and exciting things still happen, but it's not as magical. So I gave it an A- instead of an A. This is also a great party film to rent when the gang's over to visit. Sleepless in Seattle B+ 6/27 5:00 $4 Delray 10 For me, this was a most angstful film. Being single, and watching Tom Hanks magically find a perfect mate, well, led me to hope and dream that someday something similar could happen to me. There were many single women attending this movie, too, one sat 2 chairs away from me. This is a romance, a feel-good kind of movie. It's not stupidly mushy, like a typical women's film, which makes it worth watching. Hanks of course gives a very good performance. One fault with the movie is that it isn't very realistic, and it tries to be. But that aside, it's a good and entertaining way to spend a couple hours.
