Mulholland Falls C 5/2/96 7:45pm Secaucus Nick Nolte plays a tough cop, Chazz Palminteri plays his partner, and two others round the "hat squad" of tough cops that keep the mafia out of L.A. Their investigations into the death of a woman lead into trouble when it turns out that not only is she the former mistress of the lead, but she was also doing a general at a nearby nuclear testing facility. This movie is based in the late 1940's, and they do a good job of maintaining that feel. However, what was supposed to be a tough cop movie turns into a mystery and then a sad story about fidelity and in the end this movie just wanders all over the map, genre-wise. The end effect is disappointing. Palminteri gives a great performance though. Twister B+ 5/10/96 8:45pm Secaucus This movie has stunning special effects as tornados are created, with debris, cars, and even houses are thrown around. Unfortunately in many places it gets completely unbelieveable, as people are able to outrun tornados, with only a light breeze in their hair while winds over 150mph are in the tornado only a few hundred feet behind them. Plus, the hangtime of some of the cars is completely beyond belief. The lighting is also questionable. Other than all that, it's pretty stunning and suspenseful, worth watching. Original Gangstas B- 5/13/96 6:30pm Secaucus A few guys who created the gangs in Gary, Indiana some twenty years ago return to their hometown to find that the new gangs are using machine guns, doing drive-by shootings, and generally destroying entire neighborhoods. So, they set about waging war with the gangs. It's a pretty good film, but nothing spectacular or extraordinary. The Craft C+ 5/16/96 7:30pm Secaucus Three teenydoomer catholic-school girls set about recruiting a new student to be their fourth in their witch coven. Until now, they have been unable to make the magic work for them, but the new student appears to have the talent. With practice, they get their magic working and use it against all the other people that they hate. This leads to a new set of problems and ultimately sets them against each other. The film gets really gross in places, which isn't necessary, and at the end you wonder what the whole point was. It's funny and cute in places, but if you want a good time, you should go back and watch "The Quest" again instead. The Truth About Cats and Dogs B- 5/17/96 8pm Secaucus A radio talk-show host and expert veterinarian becomes the object of one man's confused obsession when she decides to meet him, but instead of describing herself as a short brunette, she goes for the tall skinny blonde. To keep up the masquerade, she has her friend meet him instead, and he ends up falling in love with the veterinarian's personality and the friend's good looks (who of course happens to be a model). The rest of the film is completely predictable, but still cute and amusing. Mission: Impossible A- 5/21/96 7pm Secaucus Tom Cruise stars as the hotshot on the team led by Mr. Phelps, who, it appears, gets wacked off early in the film. Actually, the whole team pretty much gets killed at the beginning, and the agency points the blame at the person left standing, Cruise, who then has to collect evidence to prove his innocence. Near the end of the film there's a great chase scene and shootout on board a TGV train, the kind that speeds along near 200 mph. The movie is packed with action and suspense and great characters, with lots of stunts and special effects. The plot is a bit involved, so be awake when you're watching it or you may get confused. Spy Hard C+ 5/24/96 7pm Secaucus Leslie Nielsen stars in the spoof of various spy films, in his usual comic style. The film has lots of minor laughs and sight gags, but in many places it just gets annoying with stupidity, which is probably residue from Nielsen's recent Mel Brooks film. It's an okay movie but I wouldn't make it a priority. Dragonheart B+ 5/31/96 7:45pm Secaucus This is a lighthearted fantasy about a dragonslayer, the last living dragon, and the heart he shares with an evil young king. The movie features some nice swordplay and action. Sean Connery's voice plays the computer animated dragon, which is done extremely well.
