Clean Slate B- 5/7 7:30pm Corpus Christi Dana Carvey stars as a private detective who is suffering an odd form of amnesia where he forgets who he is every time he wakes up. Other than that, the movie is comical whodunnit with a plotline fairly typical of your average private detective. It's funny, but particularly memorable. Being Human C+ 5/11 6:50pm Seacaucus This is basically a "feel-good" movie. It's about a man who loses his family and then gains it back again. It's told through the tales of five men in different times (caveman, roman empire, and so on) all played by the likeable character of Robin Williams. There's symbolism throughout, if you're into that sort of thing. Other than that it was kinda dull. Serial Mom B+ 5/14 9:30pm Times Square This is the story of a housewife that has gone extremely psychotic. She has decided to kill anyone that upsets her. She maintains strict conservative values, such as "you're not allowed to wear white shoes after Labor Day", and when she finds something that displeases her, she kills the offender. The police meanwhile have trouble making their case, because they can't figure how a lovable and sweet housewife could be a killer. It's a pretty funny film, Kathleen Turner is hilarious. The Crow A- 5/16 8pm Seacaucus This movie has a lot of likeable elements. Decent acting (featuring Brandon Lee), sets, music, and action. It's about a guy who comes back from the dead via the magical power of his familiar, a crow. So he's walking around avenging his killers and meanwhile he can't be killed. The setting is an extremely gothic urban area, almost as good as the ones in Batman. The soundtrack features modern artists like The Cure and Nine Inch Nails. The special effects look a bit phony in places, however, probably due to budget. The plot is the main failing of the film, as it is a pretty simple one with few twists. Maverick B 5/20 7:30pm Seacaucus James Garner and Mel Gibson play characters in a great gambling tale that goes on and on and on and on. There's lots of plot twists (too many, actually) and the tale never ends. Good, funny scenes with Mel Gibson, but nothing great. The Flintstones B 5/27 9pm Chicago So they took a funny cartoon and tried to make it into a live-action movie while yet keeping the surrealness of the cartoon. Well, this gimmick worked wonders for Batman, but for Flintstones, it was just pretty stupid. I must admit the special effects were high quality, but while the sets all fit in and made sense in the cartoon, in the movie they looked really fake. Still, there are many funny scenes so I guess it's worth seeing for a few laughs.
