Ten Things I Hate About You B+ 4/9/1999 10:30pm Secaucus I have no where where they came up with the name for this flick, as there's no reference to "ten things" anywhere in the movie. Basically it's a story about two sisters in high school, a stern prudish older sister who's incredibly mean to everyone, and a ditzy sexypot younger sister that everyone wants to boink. The plot is that in order for Miss Ditz to go to the prom, the other sister has to go to, and no one on the planet wants to go with her, because, after all, she's so mean! But the lustpuppies after the ditz arrange to hire a tough guy to after the meanie, and everyone ends up falling in love. It's actually quite cute and funny in many places. The film does leave the real world far behind in places though. For example, the mean older sister ends up going to see one of her favorite all-female bands in a teenage dyke bar. But she's not a dyke; just mean! Go figure. The Sticky Fingers of Time B 4/10/1999 9:45pm Tribeca This was a black & white (and sometimes color) arthouse film about a lesbian reporter/writer that ends up traveling through time, pursued by other time travellers. There are no special effects to speak of; rather, this film is more about the story and the acting, which is pretty well done. It's the typically kind of "gee, that was interesting" you get sometimes with low budget art films. Twin Dragons C+ 4/11/1999 9:15pm Secaucus As Jackie Chan movies go, this one is fun, but doesn't live up to his standards. Actually I'm starting to get a feeling of "Just Another Jackie Chan Movie". In this one he plays the role of twin brothers separated at birth that bump into each other and have to save two ladies in distress. This gives him the opportunity to play two different roles and do a lot of humor, which I found enjoyable. Go A- 4/18/1999 7:10pm Secaucus This is an odd flick about how a weekend is spent by a bunch of a slacker young people, as seen from several points of view. Have you ever noticed they never make movies about successful, motivated, or just plain useful young people? Anyway, the movie is divided into acts, and in each act we see the same period of time as it was spent by different parts of the cast, which, as it plays out, reveals more and more about each player. It's a very interesting effect, and very well directed. eXistenZ B+ 4/30/1999 10pm Angelika This is a movie about some people who come to a private meeting to beta test a new virtual reality game. They all jack into this semi-organic thing, and then find themselves inside the virtual reality world. Inside this world, there is another, even more high tech virtual reality game. The movie starts out really cheesey, very low quality and lame. Mysteriously though, as the movie progresses and we get deeper into these subrealities, the quality of the movie improves; thus the more virtual the reality, the more "real" it becomes. It's a clever effect that doesn't make much sense at first but everything comes together towards the end.
