Twelve Monkeys A- 1/13 4pm Ridgefield Park Terry Gilliam gives us the cross between "Die Hard" and "Brazil". Bruce Willis stars as this prisoner from the future, where everyone lives underground to avoid the virus that killed the planet. He is brought back in time to find information and clues leading to the origination of the virus, the virus in its pure form before it mutated wildly and made a mess of the world. Once the future doctors have this, they can create a cure. They can't change the past but are trying to fix their future. Anyway, it's extremely Brazil-like, but Willis also gives us the action-packed performance of a Die Hard film. Great pacing and sets, but the whole movie is a bit of a downer overall. Still, it's a stunning theatrical presentation. Lawnmower Man II B- 1/19 8:30pm Secaucus In this bizarre sequel, the movie appears to be really, really lame. But then after a while, things start to look familiar. And then things look very, very familiar. Eventually, it appears that the movie is, in a way, stealing scenes and actions from just about every sci-fi film of the past 20 years... to the point where there's almost nothing original left in the movie. You have to look for it, but it's actually quite interesting that way... the movie by itself, though, can't stand up. From Dusk 'til Dawn A 1/21/96 5pm Secaucus This is an action-packed movie from Roberto Rodriguez (Desperado). The first half runs like a chase/fugitive movie, and the second half runs like a horror film. While it is disturbing that the movie's genre changes midway through, the direction is really quite shocking. Very tense and action-packed, to the point of overdoing it, it takes violence and mayhem to new levels.
