Ghost in the Machine C- 1/2 2:20pm Seacaucus What starts out as a fairly interesting murder mystery becomes a horror scifi fantasy, and the change of genre is a bit upsetting to anyone who knows how computers work. It starts out with this computer hacker who has a night job of serial killer, but then he is killed midway through the film, and then his soul lives on through the computer networks and electrical lines, and he continues to kill via electrical incidents. I didn't like this movie mainly because it started out trying to be fairly realistic and ended being completely and totally absurd. Cabin Boy B 1/8 8pm Seacaucus This is a farce, and it's cute. There are several cameos starring famous figures, and David Letterman's appearance in the beginning is downright hilarious. The movie is about a 'fancy lad' who mistakenly gets on the wrong boat, ends up being abused by ugly old fishermen, gets lost in a haunted area of the seas, meets a beautiful girl, and basically has adventures. Being a farce, it doesn't take anything to seriously, and is fairly enjoyable, but not overly memorable. What's Eating Gilbert Grape B- 1/21 10pm NYC Well he's trapped in a small town in a dead-end job at the grocer, taking care of his fatally fat mother and retarded brother. His sisters don't like him, either. It's basically a character study. The events transpire as the obligatory love interest for Gilbert arrives in town, gets stuck there for a couple weeks due to auto troubles, and Gilbert has to resolve the conflicts of doing something for himself as opposed to spending all of his time taking care of his family and doing what's expected of him. This isn't an uplifting movie. Shortcuts A 1/29 8:45 Seacaucus This is a story, or rather, several stories, about days in the life of LA residents, and how their lives touch each other. It shows how people who look fairly normal, live fairly normal lives, are in reality pretty fucked-up individuals. The cast is full of stars, and the stories are told simulataneously, so you get to see a bit of family A, then B, then C, then D, then B again, then C, maybe A, and so on. It's a pretty interesting format. Basically, it shows that people just aren't what you might expect.
