Summary: Not true to the original, but absolutely great.
This was a great movie. I loved it. The special effects were top-notch, and the action was great, the soundtrack was moving, and the banter was quite funny. It's definitely worth seeing, even if you're not a trekkie. Personally though I thought the revisionist history was a little disturbing. Having Kirk take the Enterprise and the rank of Captain fresh out of the academy instead of having highly-decorated career beforehand seems to go totally against the original series's view of Kirk. My feeling was always that Kirk earned his way up through the ranks quickly due to many awards and clear combat experience, but this movie changes all that. Also this movie puts all the characters together right in the academy, instead of later in life, which was also odd. I wouldn't have done it this way. So it's definitely not the Star Trek of old. I don't think this will start much of a following. Even if this team does another couple movies, the movie isn't as legendary as Star Wars, so people will forget about it over time. What Star Trek really needs is a nice TV show again, with several seasons of episodes.
