Summary: Better than average Jim Carrey movie
This is no Truman Show, it's more like Ace Ventura. Jim Carrey is generally a funny guy, but he doesn't do drama well. Anyway, he gets these godlike powers from, uh, God, and he abuses the hell out of them. The movie never bothers to teach him the ramifications of his choices, they just create more chaos in the background. And we're torn between seeing him as a good person or as a bad, spiteful person. But the movie is a comedy, not to be taken seriously, so we're just supposed to laugh at the jokes and have a good time... which would have been easier if it weren't for the dark side of his character. |

Summary: Better than the mindless comedy I expected
This movie was better than I expected. Usually movies like this end up making God look like a total buffoon, the person with God powers pretty much destroying the world, and nothing making sense. Instead, God ends up looking more intelligent than expected, only Buffalo gets trashed, and it works out well in the end. I might end up re-rating this higher on future viewings. |
