Summary: Good movie, but Rock's performance isn't as good as Fraser's.
By itself, this is a good movie, and certainly has a lot going for it. The cast is good, even the rookies Hu and Brand deliver great performances, and I look forward to seeing more of them.
But The Rock's character was forced to be mean and angry all the time, which didn't allow for enough comic relief. Which is sad, because from WWF we all know that the Rock is great at comic relief. In the related movies (The Mummy etc), Brendan Fraser did a great combination, and was wonderful. In this movie, it runs more like a straightforward Conan film, and could have been better with some better writing, as the rest of the movie held up very well. I just didn't feel like it earned excellent marks. Also, the soundtrack was completely forgetable. |

Summary: Surprisingly unlousy
After the abortion that is "The Mummy Returns", I didn't have high hopes for this sort-of prequel. But you know what? It didn't suck. This functions well as a "Conan the Barbarian" for the new millennium. |

Summary: A B grade for a B movie
This movie reminded me strongly of Hercules and/or Xena-- about that level of camp, acting, etc. But then again what do you expect from a movie where the lead actor is a pro wrestler? If you watch it expecting a summer blockbuster, you'll be disappointed, but if you think of it as a fun campy movie, you'll probably enjoy it. |
