Summary: A more straightforward "Bad Lieutenant" | |
Denzel Washington plays the lead detective of an undercover narcotics unit, and Ethan Hawke is the rookie on his first day, learning the ropes, driving around with him. Denzel does his damnedest to corrupt him, meanwhile furthering his own goals and dealing with the problems as he's dug a deep hole for himself with this deep-cover, break-the-rules mentality that eventually leads past the breaking point...
Harvey Keitel did a similar story to this a few years ago in "Bad Lieutenant", a less obvious story, a more despicable cop, and so on. "Training Day" is a lot easier to watch, and would appeal more to those fans of rap, as the movie is filled with rap stars like Snoop Doggy Dog, Dr. Dre, and Macy Gray. If you don't care, then the movie doesn't have anything extra for you. The stars are both nominated for Oscars, and they did have good performances, but I didn't find either to be particularly Oscar-worthy. It's more like the Oscar nominations are recognizing the actors' careers to date. |
