Summary: Formulaic ripoff
So Disney took the characters and other formula elements from last year's Armageddon and slapped it together with a piece-of-shit script and hoped that by adding a good director and a few good actors, they could make another blockbuster.

The trailers reveal everything; there are few surprises and the whole thing just plods along as you'd expect from the trailer, for two hours. They even tried to rip off 2001.

Oddly, there are no takeoffs or landings or good special effects. The music sucks. The script/plot is ludicrous. The whole thing smacks of a low-budget rush-job or an incompetent failure.

Go see Pitch Black instead.

Summary: Spectacular
Sorry, Xib.. I couldnt disagree with you more. Im not a fan of traditional sci-fi, but was captivated by this movie, as was the friend I went with (who IS a big sci-fi fan). Its a rarity to me to see a sci-fi with a *real* plot, human likeable characters, and without the need for gratuitous violence or sex. The effects were stunning, and we were not bored a bit. The theater was more crowded than normal for an 11pm showing ... and it got a round of applause from the audience. Nuff said!

Summary: Garbage - and I'm not embarrased to drop an F on it
I like the dissenting views. This movie was brutally bad. From the horrendously hokie barbeque scene - the first 2 minutes of the movie - we are treated to seeing an absolute train wreck of a movie. I'm a big fan of some of the actors in this movie and I feel they must have seen it coming. Brian De Palma directed this and I would consider this the abolute low point of his career. The craptacular climax for me came with the appearance of the "alien" in the movie... who was a freaking cartoon. It may as well have been Mickey Mouse. Horrible special effects, jaw-droppingly bad storyline, painful acting, and a payoff that would have been better if I jabbed a fork in the side of my head all adds up to one of my worst of ALL TIME. No joke.
